About Jane Masters, Master of Wine

Opimian’s Wine Consultant since 2010, Jane Masters MW tastes, selects and writes the tasting notes for each of the wines in the Cellar Offerings.

Jane is celebrating her 21st year as a Master of Wine in 2019 (one of 384 globally). She held the position of Chairman of the prestigious Institute of Masters of Wine from 2016 to 2018.

Having trained as a winemaker at the Institut d’Oenologie in Bordeaux after a degree in biochemistry, Jane worked for UK retailer Marks & Spencer, running the Wine & Drinks Category for many years.

As an independent consultant, Jane is constantly on the lookout for exclusive wines from around the world for Opimian members. She regularly visits wine regions, meeting producers, and loves to share her passion and knowledge.

What is a Master of Wine (MW)?

Master of Wine is a qualification issued by The Institute of Masters of Wine in the United Kingdom. It is not to be mistaken with a Master Sommelier (MS), which is geared towards individuals working in hotel and restaurant beverage service. Both credentials are regarded as the highest achievement in the wine industry, as applicants must pass an examination, recognized worldwide for its rigour and high standards.

A Master of Wine proves his or her understanding of all aspects of wine. Graduates include winemakers, buyers, journalists, shippers, business owners, consultants, academics, and wine educators. For more information:
