Bodegas Solar Viejo:
The original winery was established in one of the noble houses (Solariegos) of Laguardia, within the walled enclosure of this iconic 11th century town. It was here that the first Solar Viejo wine was developed, the icon of the winery. The current winery, built over 40 years ago, is on the edge of the town and preserves the essence of that original experience.
With the Sierra de Cantabria protecting the vineyards from the Atlantic to the north and the high Sierra de la Demanda to the south, the magnificent Ebro river flows through the heart of this wonderful wine region.
Bodegas Solar Viejo has always striven for the very best quality; with a focus on Tempranillo, the wines are fresh and fruit-driven with clean flavours and excellent use of oak (no barrel is more than 5 years old). With careful controls in the vineyards, we are always able to ensure that the very best quality of fruit will arrive at the winery during harvest, giving our winemaking team the best possible start each year!
Gloria and Javier’s attention to detail in the vineyard as well as the winery has helped them to craft some of the Ribera del Duero’s most exciting wines in recent years. A focus on varietal aromas and flavours, using modern and sometimes experimental techniques, means that their wines are deliciously bright and fruity with mouth-watering freshness and elegant length.
Following an initial experiment with Probiotics in the vineyards to help encourage the vines’ natural defences against pests and disease, Judit Llop was able to convert the whole estate to an organic viticulture programme with phenomenal results. Not only an increase in healthy vines, but also fruit and a noticeable return of various species of flora and fauna that also support the vineyards’ health. This 15Ha paradise of vines, tucked away in some of the harshest growing conditions in Spain, is now producing some of it’s best wines in its 20 year history.
