Côte-Rôtie is the most northern Appellation of the Rhône wine region, and its hillsides are the steepest in the Rhône Valley. Domaine Pichon farms three hectares of 50-year-old vines on steep slopes of schist with Promesse a blend of several parcels. The 2019 has intense oaky aromas of coffee, spice, toast and vanilla which lie over a background of ripe dark fruits. It is a supple mellow wine, linear in shape with succulent mid-palate fruit. Flavours of blackcurrants are complemented by smoky notes which in turn lead to a bitter savoury finish. As is the tradition in Côte-Rôtie, Syrah was co-fermented with 6% Viognier in stainless steel tanks with an extended maceration on skins for 28 days. The wine was matured in new and one-year-old barrels for 14 months.
